Hugo Inglez is a storyteller
based in Amsterdam, NL.
Born and raised in Rio de Janeiro - Brazil, Hugo Inglez deserted a career in Law to start his artistic practice as a street photographer and urban art videomaker, changing suit for camera in the hectic business crux of downtown Rio.
Hugo’s anthropological approach to storytelling is heavily influenced by the early days, having embraced the dynamics of documentary and a daring attitude towards risk as touchstones of his creative language.
In a style that regards instinctive action and improvisational dynamics as drivers to production, planning is undertaken not to devise a specific outcome, rather to set the conditions for candid manifestations of beauty and connection to unfold.
Hugo’s work streams through film, imagery, poetry and popular traditions, always holding the nuances of human nature as subjects. Vulnerability, memory, expressions of originality, rituals and spirituality are mashed together in a culture-savvy paradigm that draws inspiration from the unique layering of Rio’s social fabric.
A body of work that represents an exercise in style and a testament to the versatility of Brazilian storytellers.
